How to Relate

A Modern Romantic Story In Real Time

If you're looking for an incredible real-life 2024 romantic story, this one is for you.

Meet Nick Gray. He wrote a book called The 2-Hour Cocktail Party, which is a deep dive in how to host the best two hour party no matter how introverted you identify, and his X handle is Nick Gray/ How to Make Friends. Back in April he scoured the internet looking for a blind date to meet him in Tokyo.

He wrote:

I want to do a blind date and go to Tokyo next weekend
If you’re a woman with a passport who likes sushi and Japanese food and can ride a bike in a big city… let’s go
I’ll pay for everything but in return you have to film stupid videos of me for my socials
Nick Gray’s Tokyo Blind Date
🍣 Do you like sushi?
🏙️ Do you like exploring new cities?
👱🏻‍♂️ Do you like blonde guys with glasses?

He had 400 applicants for the blind date, and he picked one woman from Utah to fly to Tokyo for this romantic excursion. Along the way, he updated his audience and didn't share a photo of the woman's face until the last day. It was going so well, they extended the trip. Read the full story here, I can't recommend it enough. I'm not going to give away the ending, but I am going to share some of his takeaways:

A beginning is a beautiful, wonderful thing
Whether that leads to Happily Ever After or it ends in an amazing blind date that I’ll remember for the rest of my life…I’ve at least learned that I’m ready to find that right person
If there is anything to take away from this experience it’s this:
Please live a good story
Do it for the plot
I’m telling you it is worth it
And find someone to do it with you, because it is way more fun when you’re not alone

After a breakup in January, people have said things like, "I wouldn't wish being single on anyone. Dating is hard," or "Welcome to dating, it's tough out here." Maybe we're jaded, maybe we're holding out for the next best thing, maybe we're telling ourselves romance is dead to avoid disappointment. Yet, it's stories like this that remind us how we can come alive when we dare to live.

Let's make a pact that we'll create our version of a Tokyo blind date, even if we just do it for the plot. Capeesh?

For the Plot,
